Guide to Using Healer Hemp Products With Your Pets
This Pet guide was created in conjunction with and reviewed for accuracy by veterinary cannabinoid experts. The following are recommendations for giving hemp products to animals. We recommend you consult with a holistic or knowledgeable veterinarian.
Dogs, cats and other animals have endocannabinoid systems, just as humans do. And, just like humans, each animal responds uniquely to the benefits of hemp products.
Furthermore, just like humans, lesser amounts of hemp deliver more benefit to animals, and the benefits will build over time. Veterinary cannabinoid experts report that many animals, once familiar with the benefits, may even start to request the hemp products in the same way they request food and treats.
Recommendations and Cautions
- No data have shown hemp to be fatal to animals, especially at the low levels recommended. (<4.5 mg/lb of full spectrum, hemp products)* Links to studies.
- Record daily your animal’s dosage, frequency, and response to the products.
- Use a high quality product that you would feel comfortable taking yourself. Make sure the products include test results from a third-party laboratory and are free of contaminants.
- Healer Drops are easy to measure, have a higher concentration of cannabinoids, and contain less carrier oil (50 mg/ml).
- Use caution if using other brand products with a lower concentration of active ingredients (1-25 mg/mL) as these contain higher amounts of carrier oils as fillers and may cause laxative effects. Note that cats in particular may hypersalivate or foam at the mouth, especially with MCT carrier oils.
- Separate the administration of hemp products from most prescribed medications by 2 to 3 hours.
- For medications in the benzodiazepine or steroid families, separate administration by 3 to 4 hours.
How to Use Healer Hemp Drops for your Pets
- Start with Healer Hemp CBD, CBDA, or CBG formulas
- 1 drop ≈ 1 mg of total cannabinoid (50 mg/ml)
- Review the Healer Pet Formula chart for your pet (above).
- Just like in humans, the unheated acidic cannabinoids in Healer’s formulas are better absorbed and highly beneficial.
- Administer the drops based on your pet’s preference:
- Drop the oil directly into your pet’s mouth.
- Place drops on a spoon or your finger to put into your pet’s mouth if they will allow it.
- Mix drops with a favorite treat, such as peanut butter, cream cheese, or yogurt, so it stays in your pet’s mouth longer to ensure sublingual absorption.
- Do not add drops to food or water because that will prevent optimal absorption.
What if my pet has multiple conditions?
To help multiple conditions, start with the one that is the most severe.
- If your pet has aches & discomfort and worry, but the worry is the primary concern followed by aches & discomfort, then start with Healer CBD to address the worry. Often the discomfort will be addressed in the process.
- If aches & discomfort are most important, start with Healer CBDA. If the aches & discomfort are still severe, add CBG for extra benefit.
Dosage Guidelines for Healer CBD, CBDA, and CBG Drops
- 1 drop ≈ 1 mg of cannabinoids
- Shake bottle to evenly distribute cannabinoids
- Frequency: 2 or 3x per day (Cats may need 3x per day)
- Start with the following drops orally* based on your pet’s weight:
- 1-10 lb: 1 drop
- 10-15 lb: 2 drops
- 16-25 lb: 3 drops
- 26-50 lb: 4 drops
- 50+ lb: 5 drops
*Double the number of drops if you are adding them to treats or foods.
Not seeing results?
If your pet is not responding, increase the dosage by the same number of recommended drops per pound every 3 days until you notice a response. For example, if you have been giving 3 drops each day, increase that to 6 drops each day.
- Record your pet’s response daily both before and 20 to 30 minutes after administering drops, based on the following scale where 10 is the best:
- Mobility: 1-10
- Energy Level: 1-10
- Appetite: 1-10
- Most Severe Symptom: 1-10
When to reduce the number of drops
- Lethargy that continues for 3 days
- GI upset or laxative effect that continues for 3+ days
- Static ataxia (if your pet is unstable on its feet)
